Summary

It’s a tremendous privilege to raise children, though for a quite different reason than most of us who are parents imagine。

While we think it’s our responsibility to mold and shape our children’s future, the essential premise of Dr。 Shefali Tsabary’s A Call to Conscious Parenting is that our children are born to us to create deep internal transformation within us。

Our children have the power to unleash our egoic behavior unlike anyone else, triggering all of our emotional reactivity。 As, through our intimate relationship with them, we are exposed to our immaturity, they become our most accurate mirror of our own lack of emotional development。 In other words, by inviting us to confront who we are in our relationship with them, our children raise us to be the parents they long for us to become。

Despite our best intentions to raise our children well, in our unconsciousness we pass on emotional legacies to our children that have deep and lasting repercussions。 Bequeathing to them our unresolved needs, unmet expectations, and frustrated dreams, we shackle them in unconscious patterns that shut them down to their own unique being。

To do justice to parenthood, a parent needs to become conscious。 Only to the degree we are willing to transform our own emotional present do we succeed in positively influencing our children’s future。

Dr。 Tsabary asks us to set aside traditional parenting strategies that major in controlling our children and instead find true kinship with their spirits by tuning into who each child is in its own unique essence。 Surrendering to the oneness of the parent-child relationship in this way lifts parenting out of the physical and into the realm of the sacred。

Peppered with practical, hands-on examples from Dr。 Tsabary’s real-life experiences with the countless families she has helped journey consciously together, A Call to Conscious Parenting is a manual for giving our children the opportunity to shine and dazzle with their natural state of being。

I have no words to describe this one。 It can be summed up into 'be present with your children', but it's explained and so well written through so many different outlooks that it's almost like therapy。 You know you should be present with your children and, overall, throughout life, but it's one thing knowing that and completely other living it。 For that this book gives you many tools and helps you embrace it and have it become something you do unconsciously (pun intended 😁)。 I have no words to describe this one。 It can be summed up into 'be present with your children', but it's explained and so well written through so many different outlooks that it's almost like therapy。 You know you should be present with your children and, overall, throughout life, but it's one thing knowing that and completely other living it。 For that this book gives you many tools and helps you embrace it and have it become something you do unconsciously (pun intended 😁)。 。。。more

A conscious grandparentAs a grandmother, this book took me back to my parenting days with my son and daughter。 I did okay flying off the deep end at times。 I wholeheartedly recommend this book which will tune you onto a new look at your Children as spiritual beings experiencing their human-ness while trying to figure out relationships with parents。 I have recommended this book to my son and his wife who are growing with a 5 year old and a 10 year old。 I wish them well。 "A conscious grandparent。" A conscious grandparentAs a grandmother, this book took me back to my parenting days with my son and daughter。 I did okay flying off the deep end at times。 I wholeheartedly recommend this book which will tune you onto a new look at your Children as spiritual beings experiencing their human-ness while trying to figure out relationships with parents。 I have recommended this book to my son and his wife who are growing with a 5 year old and a 10 year old。 I wish them well。 "A conscious grandparent。" Catherine L。 。。。more

Great read with some interesting ideas。 Worth reading again in a few years time when my child is older (currently a toddler), where the advice will be a bit more applicable。

This makes my Top 3 of parenting books to read! I’m not sure it would have resonated and spoken to me as much a year ago when I was spiritually unconscious yet now it makes me wish I had found my way to this sooner to pass on more of the good to my kids rather than unconsciously projecting pain, trauma and fears onto our relationship。 I see myself reading this a few more times in the coming years。 I do wish it elaborated more on scenarios and situations yet also appreciate it leaving room for us This makes my Top 3 of parenting books to read! Love it! Love it! Love it!What a meaningful book and what a great way to understand our parenting journey。 I’m inspired and encouraged by this book and strongly recommend it to any parent who wants to improve and invest in their relationship with their children。As soon as finished reading it I started again。 It felt like a meditation to me, all the lessons were going deep into my soul and I really want to internalize all the teachings in this book。 So grateful to the author。

It was okay。 I loved the messages, highlighted, and took a lot of notes。 I learned many new things and appreciated the included reflective questions。 However, at times I found it hypocritical and judgmental。 I wish it was more strengths-based and positive rather than focusing on the negative and what parents do wrong。 Every time the author wrote about the “failure of the parent” it made me cringe。 Also, a lot more could have been added in the infant/toddler section about emotional regulation, bu It was okay。 I loved the messages, highlighted, and took a lot of notes。 I learned many new things and appreciated the included reflective questions。 However, at times I found it hypocritical and judgmental。 I wish it was more strengths-based and positive rather than focusing on the negative and what parents do wrong。 Every time the author wrote about the “failure of the parent” it made me cringe。 Also, a lot more could have been added in the infant/toddler section about emotional regulation, building empathy and awareness, and attachment/bonding。 。。。more

I couldn’t read the book beyond 3 chapters。 Nothing wrong or nothing against the book。 Its just my choice in books lately。 The author introduces an important concept about how parenting is as much a growth of parents as it is for the kid and the need to accept the kids as they are。 I agree on that。 I didn’t go through all the other details。 I would rather read a book that teaches me how to handle a toddler or how to teach them to handle their emotions。

Great book - focuses on being present and conscious of your emotions and actions。 I like that it has a lot of teachings or wisdom aligned with spirituality and human connection。 I think we as a society have lost the value in emotional connection and empathy; its definitely affecting families and parenting in a negative way。

I would say this was a healing book, because it helped me to understand the concept of parents' role that was distorted by some of the elders I socialized with。 Even though I am not a parent, the principles will help me to be present for my nephew and be comfortable being。 I would say this was a healing book, because it helped me to understand the concept of parents' role that was distorted by some of the elders I socialized with。 Even though I am not a parent, the principles will help me to be present for my nephew and be comfortable being。 。。。more

As a parent trying to be good at the job, I'm constantly looking for solid advice on how it's done。 The advice out there often focuses on details when sometimes we need the big picture。 This book was a great resource to remind us that sometimes it's about us the parent, not our kids。 "Why do they keep doing that grrr?" can be transformed to "how can I better teach them to ____。" It also brings down to earth the "put on your oxygen mask first" advices that floats around out in the clouds。 Parents As a parent trying to be good at the job, I'm constantly looking for solid advice on how it's done。 The advice out there often focuses on details when sometimes we need the big picture。 This book was a great resource to remind us that sometimes it's about us the parent, not our kids。 "Why do they keep doing that grrr?" can be transformed to "how can I better teach them to ____。" It also brings down to earth the "put on your oxygen mask first" advices that floats around out in the clouds。 Parents can fall into a pattern of taking care of their kids while their life falls apart whereas we could use the parenting journey to learn and grow as people which wold have a side benefit of showing/teaching our kids how to be in the world。With all parenting books I think it helps to make notes on take aways and develop our own parenting values。 No one book is going to answer or needs but using books to develop a parenting philosophy seems better than just going to a default based on what we see or experienced。 Intentionality is key。 。。。more

I like most of the authors general parenting/life philosophies, but find some of her writings to be preachy and condescending at times which is why this is not a 5 start book for me。 I listened to it on audible where it was read by the author so perhaps I would have found it more approachable if I had read a paper version?

I am really appreciating the Eastern view of understanding。 I don’t feel like this is an amazing parenting book per-say, but an excellent personal development and self understanding book。 The material I found most beneficial was analyzing patterns and working to understand where they come from so you can do better, particularly in terms of understanding how the way you were parented and your childhood impacts you now。 It left me with a lot to think about。 I also really love the emphasized ideas I am really appreciating the Eastern view of understanding。 I don’t feel like this is an amazing parenting book per-say, but an excellent personal development and self understanding book。 The material I found most beneficial was analyzing patterns and working to understand where they come from so you can do better, particularly in terms of understanding how the way you were parented and your childhood impacts you now。 It left me with a lot to think about。 I also really love the emphasized ideas of living in the present moment and accepting life and those around you, as is。 This is definitely a read I would recommend for someone seeking to understand themselves better。 The actual parenting advice was a bit lacking, but I gained a great deal from the book regarding being a parent/ person。 。。。more

This was great。 I needed it。 My only criticism is that books like these rarely introduce the concepts of culture or systemic issues like racism, classism and sexism。 While the information was good and there certainly were many concepts I will implement in my own parenting, I kept wondering about how parenting can be extremely cultural。 In some cases the way some people parent their children can also be a product of trying to protect their children from systemic oppressions。 For example, teaching This was great。 I needed it。 My only criticism is that books like these rarely introduce the concepts of culture or systemic issues like racism, classism and sexism。 While the information was good and there certainly were many concepts I will implement in my own parenting, I kept wondering about how parenting can be extremely cultural。 In some cases the way some people parent their children can also be a product of trying to protect their children from systemic oppressions。 For example, teaching hard lessons at home because the world will be such a harsh place for you because you are Black and a woman for example。 Or how having fewer resources in a rich society also impacts parenting。 For example, focusing on achievement because it's the only way we can break the cycle of poverty。 I am not saying that this method of parenting is right (though it was the way I was raised), I am simply saying that sometimes these books need to address how these things can show up in how we parent。 I need a book that helps me work through those issues。 。。。more

I really enjoyed this book。 She supports the idea that our children mirror us, and that as we treat them with respect they learn to respect themselves and the world around them。 Lots to contemplate, lots of actionable ideas, and of course psychology。 I would recommend to anyone who plans to be a parent。 Or anyone who wants to better parent themselves。

Not my favorite parenting book。 I felt like her negative parenting examples were extreme and not at all in line with most parents who would pick up this book。 There weren’t a lot of actionable steps to move forward consciously。 I also disagree with some of her views。 Personally, I find being stuck in traffic for a long time as negative and I think it’s okay to voice that, “yeah, this sucks but it’s where we are now。 how can we make this experience a bit better?” I would also say this isn’t reall Not my favorite parenting book。 I felt like her negative parenting examples were extreme and not at all in line with most parents who would pick up this book。 There weren’t a lot of actionable steps to move forward consciously。 I also disagree with some of her views。 Personally, I find being stuck in traffic for a long time as negative and I think it’s okay to voice that, “yeah, this sucks but it’s where we are now。 how can we make this experience a bit better?” I would also say this isn’t really a parenting book, it’s more of a book that says, “hey, when you work on yourself that flows into your parenting and you become better at it。” But not how to work on yourself。 。。。more

There are definitely some gems of wisdom, and I love a lot of her perspectives。 But the overall feel of the book often felt harsh, negative, and at many times dramatic/catastrophising。 Definitely some good parts, I highlighted many; but other parts had extreme examples/statements and so I didn’t love it overall。 Her book Awakened Family was way better。
